My work focuses on modelling the evolution of gases and particles (aerosol) in the atmosphere. With effects on climate change and air quality, advancing the undepinning science of aerosol is part of NCAS stategy. The current project I work on with colleagues at the University of Manchester is a software package to simulate aerosol chambers. Chambers are a key tool in the interrogation of aerosol processes and a reliable model can help to design and analyse their experiments. If understanding of a process, such as gas-phase photochemistry, can be improved through experiment-model coupling, it is then possible to evaluate its importance in the real-world atmosphere through sensitivity tests both in the chamber model and larger scale models. Incorporation of improved understanding in large scale models then gives greater certainty on model results for climate change and air quality.
